A Sporting Chance

As part of
their summer camp program for girls, A Sporting Chance,
has developed a Counselor-In-Training Program to provide
up to 10 female youths with leadership and life skills
while being mentored by caring adults. The funding will go towards
the starter kits that the CITs
receive including a backpack and tennis shoes.

Group
Thailand - $1,500
Anjaree seeks to improve the social environment for Thai
lesbians by community building, public and media
education, and policy advocacy.
Artists in Residence
Dover, New Hampshire - $1,000
AIR
provides life-changing experiences for teenage girls in
need in the under-served regions of Strafford and
Rockingham counties.
Funding will go towards the summer program for low-income high
school freshman and sophomore girls.
Capacitar
Watsonville, CA - $1,000
The funding
will support a pilot project of workshops that combine
training in leadership and organizational development
skills to empower women and their families. In response to invitations
from grassroots organizations, Capacitar
will bring these workshops to Appalachia and El Salvador.
Chicago
Health Connection
Chicago, Illinois - $500
The funding
will support the Peer Counselor Training and Placement
Program that works with community women to promote
breastfeeding through paid positions in area hospitals
and health centers.
Concourse House
Bronx, New York - $1000
The Kids in
Motion program offers music/drama-movement classes to
homeless children. Going into their third year,
they plan to invite mothers to attend the sessions to
give them an appreciation of what their children are
learning as well as the opportunity for children and
their mothers to share song and musical games.
Film Arts
Foundation - Lebanon:
Meaning in the Ruins
Oakland, California - $1,000
This 56
minute documentary follows the lives of youths who grew
up in the war zone of Lebanon with footage from 1993
through today. The
grant will support completion of the film.
Foundation for Women
Bangkok, Thailand - $1,500
Through the
Women's Information Network, FFW provides direct service
to women as well as public education and information
services. The
funding will support educational pamphlets on domestic
violence and abuse against women and children.
Fuerza
Unida, Inc.
San
Antonio, Texas - $1,000
The funding
will support the Member Public Leadership Education
Project. The specific purpose of the
project is to create more women organizers working for
racial, economic, political and social justice in San
Antonio. The project will work to share
skills between younger women and their older compañeras and build relationships
with women of all ages.
Girls Write Now
Los
Angeles, California - $1,200
This new
program plans to guide and encourage young women in
developing their writing and communication skills through
mentoring relationships with women writers.
The Girl Project
San
Francisco, CA - $1,000
The funding
will support completion of Shoes, a short
narrative film that explores issues of limitations and
powerlessness, class-bias amongst children and self worth
through materialism.
Heal the Healer
Fort
Wayne, Indiana - $700
The grant
will support a day long mini-retreat for women healers,
particularly those who work in Domestic and Sexual
Violence, to honor the work they do and provide time to
share, network and support each other.
Literature for All of
Us
Evanston, Illinois - $1,000
This
program brings the rewards of reading and writing through
book group discussions. The grant will support a new
group at Nikola Tesla Alternative High School, a Chicago Public School for pregnant and parenting teenage girls. Through their empowerment
model, book group members are validated as they give
voice to their thoughts, feelings, and experiences.
Organized Chaos Mediaworks
Brooklyn, New York - $900
Funding
will support the making of Silent Choices, a
documentary film that examines the politics of abortion
and its impact on the lives of African American women.
Redmoon Theater
Chicago, Illinois - $500
The
theater's after school program, Dramagirls,
is designed to foster confidence in adolescent girls by
teaching powerful and assertive skills such as
playwriting, dance, drumming, puppetry, and performance.
Women
Land Play
Project
Brooklyn, New York - $750
The funding
will support the production of Free-me-dom, A More Tangible Me, a surreal comic
trilogy about race gender and the struggle to be defined
by ones own humanity, featuring a multiracial, gay and
straight cast of performance artists, comedians and
singers.

This
project is devoted to assisting indigenous women farmers
of this region gain from economic and technical
resources. They
plan to also help to protect the land against
deforestation, and preserve the cultural traditions of
the Andino and Shuar
people of Ecuador. They
hope to have a direct impact on the living conditions of
the poor women agricultural workers of this area.

offers the Girls' PROUT camp in Northern
Pennsylvania
where girls engage in age-appropriate workshops on wealth
disparity, gender representation in the media,
irresponsible corporate behavior, and a variety of
environmental issues and learning about healthy lifestyle
habits. The funding will help support
two girls from low income inner city families to the camp
attending the camp.
The PatsyLu Fund
for Women's Music Projects grantees:
Circus Amok
Brooklyn, New York - $2,000
Circus Amok
is a lesbian-directed alternative circus theater whose
mission is to provide free, public art addressing
contemporary issues of social justice to the people of New York. The
grant will fund a commission to lesbian
composer/instrumentalist Terry Dame to create 35 minutes
of new music for their June 2002 program.
International
Alliance for Women in Music
Miramar, Florida - $1,200
The grant
will support the recently formed student chapters of the
organization in order to increase its outreach, raise
consciousness among young women of political issues in
the women-in-music movement, strengthen the network for
the dissemination of information, and broaden the base of
support and future leadership of the IAWM.
Pauline Oliveros

Kingston, New York - $2,200
The grant
will commission two young lesbian composers to write
trombone compositions through the New Works from Women:
Trombone project. POF will offer Deep Listening
Space in Kingston for concerts featuring commissioned work and will
facilitate performances on The Wired Trombone
program in Texas and California.

The grant
will go towards a stipend to a member of the old lesbian
community to conduct outreach to other old lesbians in
