The following organizations were awarded grants in the June 1998 cycle.

Edenwald-Gun Hill Neighborhood Center, Bronx, NY
Project: In-Charge Parenting Program: Grant: $2,000

The In-Charge Parenting Program addresses the special needs of low-income young parents and their families. The vast majority of the program participants are single mothers who reside with their families in the Edenwald Public Houses in the North East Bronx and are dependent on welfare. This program intervenes at a crucial point in the lives of young parents to help give them the support and skills they need to live healthy and independent lives.

Sweetwater Center for the Arts, Sewickley, PA
Project: I Can Still Quilt Without My Glasses: Grant: $2,000

This grant will go towards support for a fiber art exhibit with an emphasis on quilting along with an accompanying exhibit catalogue. This project promotes understanding of historic and contemporary African and African American culture. Sweetwater seeks to stimulate broad-based interest in, and support for, those who create and appreciate the arts of all cultures through quality art education and experiences.

CALM, Inc. - Custody Action for Lesbian Mothers, Narberth, PA
Project: General support: Grant: $2,500

CALM is a legal support service for lesbians facing loss of custody or visitation rights because of their sexual orientation. Since 1974, CALM has been committed to helping lesbian mothers keep their children.

CHAIR - Committee for Humanitarian Assistance to Iranian Refugees, New York, NY
Project: Iranian Women's Program: Grant: $2,000

Each year CHAIR provides assistance to hundreds of women refugees and asylum seekers completely free of charge. The Iranian Women's Program focuses on providing comprehensive case management for gender based persecution cases. Services include assisting women in presenting their claims, writing letters of support, and acting as expert witnesses on behalf of Iranian women in New York City.

Pennsylvania NOW Education Fund, Philadelphia, PA
Project: Women's Leadership Development Project: Grant: $2,000

This project was created to provide leadership training for women and girls that will enable them to take their full and equal place in society. Through special workshops and training sessions the WLDP provides information and resources to women and girls regarding the way sex discrimination affects their lives. The program assists women and girls to identify the barriers created by sexism and to work to create solutions.

North Fork Women For Women Fund, Greenport, NY
Project: Development of Lesbian Health Resource Center: Grant: $1,980

NFWFWF gives assistance and support to lesbians in the North Fork community of Long Island who are facing emergency health situations, difficult situations due to aging, or disruptions of physical or mental well-being, as well as those with inadequate or nonexistent health insurance. For their clients, the Lesbian Health Resource Center will provide a computer work station with internet access, and develop a web page with links to on-line health resources.

Women's Justice Center of Westchester, White Plains, NY
Project: Legal Resource Guide for Women with HIV/AIDS: Grant: $1,000

The WJCW provides free legal education to Westchester County residents with a focus on elder law and matrimonial law. They are committed to ensuring a broad distribution of information throughout Westchester County to groups which are traditionally under-represented in their access to the legal system. This comprehensive legal guide for women living with HIV/AIDS is designed to familiarize women with the legal issues they may encounter. The guide will be used in conjuction with phone counseling and educational seminars.

Wingspan Domestic Violence Project, Tucson, AZ
Project: The Domestic Violence Program for Lesbians: Grant: $2,000

The Wingspan Domestic Violence Project provides crisis intervention educational support groups, and outreach and education to lesbians in the Tucson/Pima County area of Arizona.

WELRP - White Earth Land Recovery Project, Ponsford, MN
Project: Niigaanikwe (Young Women's Leadership): Grant: $1,000 Open Meadows Foundation; $1,000 Jeanne Meurer Fund

This program was established to focus specifically on developing leadership skills, building self-esteem, and encouraging higher education among the girls on the White Earth Reservation. Through retreats, outdoor skills instruction, and an after-school mentoring club the young women are better equipped to face issues such as poverty, teenage pregnancy, substance abuse and domestic violence.

Women's Bean Project, Denver, CO
Project: Dishwasher Purchase: Grant: $2,371

The WBP is a stepping-stone toward outside employment and personal and economic self-sufficiency for women who come from backgrounds of chronic unemployment, poverty or displacement. Within the context of a viable business, the women earn a steady paycheck, develop solid transferable work skills and strengthen their sense of self-confidence and personal responsibility. This grant will cover the purchase and installation of a new dishwasher for the catering kitchen.

Pelican Bay Foundation, Seattle, WA
Project: Distribution of the documentary film "We're Here To Stay": Grant: $1,000

Filmmaker Liz Latham is producing and directing this 56 minute documentary film to tell the story of Hands Off Washington and the story of the struggle for gay and lesbian civil rights in Washington state. In 1997, Hands Off Washington took a proactive approach by sponsoring an initiative to protect employment rights of gay and lesbian people.

Nkeanyi Women's Health Services, Inc., Brooklyn, NY
Project: Action Center Clothing Bank Membership Dues: Grant: $2,500

Nkeanyi is a West African word that means self-help. Nkeanyi Women's Health Services is an eight year old, women-run, non-profit organization. They work with West African women and children who, for various reasons, find themselves starting new lives in the United States. The mission of Nkeanyi is to function as a bridge between these women and children and mainstream resources and agencies.
