AFRICAN ANCESTRAL LESBIANS UNITED FOR SOCIETAL CHANGE

New York, New York - $750
AALUSC provides services to lesbians of the African Diaspora.Having just hired their first staff person, they hope to increase outreach, participation from members and programming.

 

CENTER FOR ARTISTIC REVOLUTION

Little Rock, Arkansas - $1000

The "Kind of Women I Am" project serves to bring together a diverse group of women for a series of seven participatory sessions culminating in an educational community event.  Women will explore sameness and differences while working to dismantle stereotypes and myths about one another.  Exploration of identity and its impact on the relationships among the women will include hands on creative expression.

 

CENTRO LEGAL DE LA RAZA

Oakland, California - $1000

Funding will support Jornaleras Unidas (United Women Workers) a program founded, led, and staffed by volunteers from the low-wage worker community. 

 

Georgia Asc. of Black Women Attorneys

Decatur, Georgia - $1000

GABWA and the Georgia Access to Justice Project created the Civil Pro Bono Project to focus solely on the needs of incarcerated mothers and their children.  Funding will support seminars on family law and other legal topics.

 

GIRLSMARTS

Corning, NY - $750

GirlSmarts is a series of workshops and retreats for teenage girls in the Southern Finger Lakes region of New York offering the opportunity to use two- and three- dimensional artwork, improvisational movement, creative writing, storytelling, and other arts-based activities to discover and affirm their own beliefs and abilities.  Funding will in part support creation of e-newsletter and message board to facilitate ongoing communication between participants and with the facilitator.

 

INSITITUTE OF WOMEN & ETHNIC STUDIES

New Orleans, Louisiana - $1000

Founded by two African-American female physicians, IWES develops culturally proficient, multidisciplinary and holistic health programs, activities, and research models that promote health and quality of life through social change, public policy, and collaboration. 

 

The LYDIA PINK PROJECT

Providence, Rhode Island - $1000

Funding will go towards submitting two short movies about young queer women of color to film festivals and distribution to queer- and diversity- themed groups in high schools and youth-focused nonprofits. 

 

MADRES LESBIANAS de PUERTO RICO

San Juan, Puerto Rico - $1000

Funding will support activities for lesbian mothers and their children. 

 

MAINE WOMEN's POLICY CENTER

Hallowell, Maine - $750

Seventh and eighth grade girls from across Maine spend the day learning how the state government works, the important role women play in shaping public policy, and how young women can have a voice on issues they care about.

 

MERCY FAMILY VIOLENCE RESPONSE PROGRAM

Baltimore, Maryland - $1000

This program addresses family violence in a hospital setting and provides outreach and advocacy in the community.  Programs include weekly support groups to challenge adolescent girls to examine and change their belief systems that lead them to use violence in their relationships and a drop-in center for women involved with prostitution.

 

NATIONAL ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN WOMEN‚S FORUM

Washington, DC - $500

NAPA WF‚s mission is to forge a progressive movement for the social and economic justice and political empowerment of Asian Pacific American women and girls.  Funding will support a two-day „Building a National APA Women‚s Movement: Economic Justice and the Promise of Democracy‰ conference in March 2004.

 

The Network/lA Red

Boston, Massachusetts - $600

The Network/La Red serves as a local and national model for battered women‚s programs, GLBT health care and service providers, and other GLBT domestic violence groups.  Funding will go towards printing and distribution of the next two editions of their free bilingual newsletter.

 

PEOPLE AND POSSIBILITIES, INC.

Niagara Falls, New York - $750

Funding will support "Let's Talk," a program to provide cultural awareness during Black History Month for girls 12-16.  Participants will learn about African American culture through the art of storytelling and through an education field trip of the Underground Railroad.

 

RURAL MEDIA ARTS AND EDUCATION CENTER

Mariposa, California ˆ $500

"Reel Women" is a curated film series focusing on the lives of women from diverse cultural backgrounds who breached personal and societal boundaries to change their lives or the lives of those around them.  Rural Media Arts serves the isolated rural community of Mariposa in the Sierra-Nevada foothills.

 

RURAL WOMEN‚S ENVIRONMENT NETWORK

Gokana Rivers State, Nigeria - $500

Formed in 2001 to address various environmental and human rights problems facing women, campaigns include community protests against violence, anti-AIDS, anti-cult and against the use of agro-chemicals and explosives to harvest fish stock.

 

SOLUTIONS PROGRAM

San Francisco, California - $750

Solutions is an expressive arts and health education program for girls aged 12-18 inside San Francisco's Youth Guidance Center.  Funding will support printing Keeping it Real, a publication for girls inside and outside juvenile hall. 

 

Squeaky Wheel/Buffalo media resources

Phoenix, Arizona - $500

A center for independent film, video, computer, digital and audio art, the TechARTS for Girls program helps girls become confident computer users and artists.  Working with media professionals from different fields, girls learn graphics, art, web and design software.  Advanced sessions include video and Flash.

 

STUDENTS TAKE ACTION FOR NEW DIRECTIONS

Atlanta, Georgia - $750

A program of Women‚s Action for New Directions, STAND‚s mission is to empower young women to act politically, to promote peace, equality and progressive social change.  Federal budget priorities is a specific focus.  Funding will support participation in conferences, workshops and trainings.

 

SUCCESSFUL COMEBACKS INC.

Phoenix, Arizona - $100

Funding will support Successful Comebacks collaboration with Women Living Free to go into the Arizona Department of Corrections women‚s prison/Perryville, weekly to deliver self esteem, motivational, job readiness training and to provide follow up after release. 

 

UGANDA WOMEN RIGHTS AWARENESS

Mbale, Uganda - $500

UWRA Project‚s goal is to reach beyond ethnic, cultural, and religious boundaries that provide loophole exploiting the women-girlchild rights in Bugisu/Teso and Kapchorwa communities.  The project will offer direct technical aid and seek to extend sensitization, education, training and counseling services on women‚s rights awareness. 

 

A WINDOW BETWEEN WORLDS

Venice, California - $1000

The Women‚s Windows Program provides weekly two-hour art workshops for battered women living in domestic violence shelters.  Funding will be used to provide initial training, support and art supplies to two leaders at new shelter so that they can offer the weekly workshops.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - $1000

GAI facilitates all-girl spaces to encourage the self-expression, social action, and leadership of young women in Philadelphia.  Funding will support development of the youth board and youth-led projects.

Dorchester, Massachusetts - $1000

Funding will provide start-up funds to establish a youth organizing component as a natural expansion of political education programming, to develop the organizing skills, leadership capacity, and political analyses of under-19 members.

Funding will support a women's dairy farming project - where they had to change their environment in order to start the project - a model project that could be duplicated in Africa.

This program serves Native American women, girls and teenage moms.  Funding will support the women‚s role as advocates in their community, leadership, entrepreneurship, job and life skills.

The "Positive Messages Youth Program" for girls includes technical training in a recording studio, voice training, choreography, and song-writing workshops.

Funding will support the  "Third Lesbian Music Series" to be held in June 2004.

 

MEDICINE SHOW THEATER

New York, New York - $1500

Funding will support a workshop production of a comic opera about female societies called "Queen Bee-ing, The Bee Opera."

 

IPACE

Austin, Texas - $500

Funding will support the "Recollections of African-American Jazz Musicians" oral documentary of 3 African American Women Jazz Musicians in Austin.

 

CALLIOPE WOMEN'S CHORUS

Minneapolis, Minnesota - $1500

Funding will support a winter concert: "Women of the Pacific Rim" with music written by women from that area.

 

ST. CLOUD AREA AMERICAN INDIAN CENTER

St. Cloud, Minnesota - $ 500

Funding will support the "Daughters of Nations Drum Group."
